Shelby County v. Holder
Shelby County v. Holder, 570 U.S. 529 (2013)
⚖ COURT DECISIONcampaign finance· 2013
What the Court Ruled
Supreme Court struck down Section 4(b) of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which contained the formula determining which jurisdictions were subject to federal preclearance before changing voting laws. The decision effectively disabled the preclearance requirement of Section 5, enabling states to change election laws without federal approval.
